Playful Composition with Third Coast Percussion

On Demand: November 16, 8:00 a.m. — January 31, 5:00 p.m. (PST)

This program — geared toward grades 3-5 but appropriate for all ages — includes an interactive element in which participating students find, make and record sounds and rhythms using everyday household items and (optionally) submit them to Third Coast Percussion, who will create a new composition using student recordings.

This event consists of three parts. After you've registered in Eventbrite, you will receive the links to all three videos listed here via email (starting Nov.16)

PART ONE: Think Outside the Drum

November 16, 2020
(content available through January 31, 2021)

Performances by Third Coast Percussion are interspersed with teaching moments that introduce the building blocks of music (rhythm, melody and timbre) through active participation in a series of interactive activities including clapping, singing, and a listening game. Five videos will be available to participants, each between 5-10 minutes long. Watch and learn at your own pace, or participate as a classroom if directed by your teacher.

PART TWO: Scavenger Hunt

November 16, 2020
(content available through January 31, 2021)

Pre-recorded instructional video for students, based on Danny Clay's ”Sonic Scavenger Hunt.” Third Coast Percussion will provide creative prompts for finding/recording sounds and rhythms around their homes and directions for submitting these to the ensemble for the final composition/compilation. The deadline to submit recordings has been extended to December 5 to be included in the composition. (A PDF link to submission instructions will be posted here by November 16).

PART THREE: Student Performance Video

December 15, 2020
(content available through January 31, 2021)

A video of the final composition/compilation made by Third Coast Percussion will be shared via email with all of the participants for their enjoyment.
