Founder and Executive Producer of Step Afrika! C. Brians Williams discusses his own exploration of the tradition of stepping and Step Afrika’s latest work, Drumfolk, with UW Dean of Undergraduate and Academic Affairs Ed Taylor.
They dive into how Williams came to form the world’s first professional company dedicated to stepping — a polyrhythmic, percussive dance form that uses the body as an instrument — and the truly American importance of the Stono Rebellion of 1739, which came to inspire Drumfolk as whole.
